EDMONTON, ALBERTA, August 12, 2009— On behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology, Mike Lake, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Millwoods-Beaumont, today announced a Knowledge Infrastructure Program investment of $1,017,000 in Concordia University College.
The investments are part of the Government of Canada's two-year, $2-billion plan to repair and expand research and educational facilities at Canadian colleges and universities. The program is helping to provide economic stimulus and promote employment by creating jobs for engineers, architects, tradespeople and technicians. It is also helping to generate the advanced technological infrastructure needed to keep Canada’s colleges and universities at the forefront of scientific advancement.
"Through the renewal of college and university facilities, such as those at Concordia University College of Alberta, our researchers will be equipped to lead in their fields, pursuing world-class excellence," said Mike Lake, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry. "This funding represents one way that our government is working to strengthen Canada’s capacity for innovation and growth in the global knowledge economy, to the benefit of all Canadians."
Concordia University College was awarded $1,017,000 for their Campus Research & Learning Revitalization program.
"Concordia is extremely grateful to receive this generous contribution from the federal government," said President, Dr. Gerald Krispin. "Not only will this funding provide a quick start to our shovel-ready projects, but it also provides an immediate impact on our students in the classroom and in the research field."
Canada's Economic Action Plan sets out to stimulate the Canadian economy over the next two years and to improve our long-term competitiveness through $12 billion in new infrastructure investment, which includes the $2-billion Knowledge Infrastructure Program. This new support is the next substantive investment in the Government of Canada's multi-year Science and Technology Strategy, Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada's Advantage.
