Security Services - 780-479-8761
Concordia has contracted the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires to provide security services to the campus community. Security personnel conduct regular patrols of the campus keeping a watchful eye out for hazards, suspicious activity, and security risks. Concordia security staff are available on a 24-hour basis, by calling: 780-479-8761
Security staff are not police officers; consequently, they do not have the same authorities or powers.
The role of the security staff is to:
- Provide information and general assistance to the campus community.
- Patrol and monitor the campus for security and safety issues.
- Report suspicious, hazardous, or inappropriate conditions or activities to the proper authority.
- Log all unusual incidents for future reference.
- Control and monitor building and restricted area access.
- Provide emergency first aid service.
- Expedite, assist, and supplement the services of external emergency response agencies.
The training of the security staff is designed with the above in mind. Security duties are generally proactive and preventative. The staff are not trained as peace officers, investigators, or as mediators. They will, however, assist any person in need of such services by contacting the appropriate authorities and by recording the details of any incident for the purpose of an investigation.
In order to more effectively monitor campus security, Concordia maintains a log of security incidents and hazards. You may report an incident or hazard in person at the Plant Operations/Security office or by calling 780-479-9340.
Be Safe
Although Concordia has a very low crime rate, every year a few students at Concordia are victims of acts of vandalism, theft or assault.
- Never leave your laptop, packages, purses or wallets unattended; that quick walk to the cafeteria, washroom or is all the time it takes to lose your valuables.
- Always keep expensive items on your person. Lockers and cars are easily broken into. Better yet, don't bring these articles to campus unless absolutely necessary.
- Always lock your vehicles and store valuables in the trunk or out of sight.
- Lock bicycles with a good quality lock.
- Become familiar with people who have lockers in your area.
- Keep your locker combination to yourself.
- Walk with a friend or call Campus Security (780-479-8761) when leaving campus buildings late at night.
- Know your surroundings and keep in mind the potential dangers that you may be walking into.

When to call Security, when to call 9-1-1, what will security do...?
IN CASE OF AN ALTERCATION- Security will respond immediately to the area. They will call for additional support from the Plant Operations staff if necessary.
...call Security....any time threats of violence are made. The presence of a number of staff (potential witnesses) will often diffuse the situation. In the case of a violent confrontation between students, the staff will intervene only when it is safe to do so.
...call police...if the situation has escalated to violence Call 9-1-1 immediately and then call security.
IN CASE OF A MEDICAL EMERGENCY - Most Security staff have received recent first aid training. Every attempt is made to regularly update their training. There are two well-stocked First Aid kits in the Plant Operations/Security office.
...call Security...whenever there is a need for First aid assistance.
...call an Ambulance...If a potentially life threatening condition exists Call 9-1-1 immediately and then call security. (If possible have someone else call security while you call 9-1-1. You may be asked to stay on the line with the 9-1-1 operator until an ambulance arrives).
IN CASE OF A SUSPICIOUS SITUATION OR PERSONS ON CAMPUS - If you are aware of a suspicious situation on campus call security immediately.
When reporting the incident be sure to include the following:
- Your name.
- The nature of the incident.
- The location of the incident.
- A description of the person(s) involved.
- A description of the property involved.
Trust your instincts. Do not be concerned that your suspicions may prove unfounded. Please note that security will usually check on the situation before contacting you with their findings. Do not be too concerned if you do not hear from them again immediately after you call. They may choose to observe and assess the situation for a period of time before contacting you. Do not approach suspicious persons by yourself.
IN CASE OF THEFT OR BREAK-IN - Security will respond to the location and log the details of the incident for future reference. If the incident involves personal property, it is responsibility of the property owner to contact the police.
